Digital Design and Fabrication Spring 2010 – Light Project

February 28th, 2010 by admin

For this project, You will be required to produce an object that meets two basic requirements:

  • The object/installation contains one or more working light fixtures
  • You use the laser cutter as a part of your fabrication process

You will make a 3d model of your project to use a guide for the fabrication process.

For the lighting component, you have two options (we will demo both in class):

  • DC lighting or LED’s that can be controlled with an arduino (more on arduino in another post)
  • AC lighting (bulbs that plug into a standard household socket). NOTE: You will not be wiring AC lighting in this class! If you go with this option, you will be ONLY making a housing for an existing, working socket with a cord. These can be purchased at the hardware store.

For your options on the laser cutter, I would recommend the following materials for this project, although you are encouraged to explore whichever materials you wish.

  • Basswood
  • Paper, Mylar, Vellum
  • Cloth

If you have any questions about the laser cutter, please refer to the previous post about possible materials. Also, you can ask me if you are unsure.

The calendar has been updated for the rest of the semester. This calendar should have all of the dates for using the laser cutter and the 3d printer during class time.  Please pay special attention to our meeting places and times, as many of our class meetings will be taking place in the formLab.

Please check with the formLab equipment calendar for setting up appointments outside of class time. Any slot that says “Jay in formLab – Monitor hours” Can be reserved for an appointment. Please try to keep you appointment times to less than 2.5 hours so we can accomodate 2 users per day. BFA Design Seminar – Week 8 Response Questions

February 22nd, 2010 by admin

Read the following essay by Susan Sontag:

“Against Interpretation”

*You can access pdf versions under the reading list post.

Consider the above information and respond to the following questions:

  1. Given this Sontag quote from pg. 2: “Whether we conceive of the work of art on the model of a picture (art as a picture of reality) or on the model of a statement (art as the statement of the artist), content still comes first.” How do you think that your work has elements of mimesis(imitation)?
  2. Do some works of art represent other works of art that have gone before? Why do you think this happens? Do you find that an important dimension of meaning when looking at a work of art?
  3. Do you value the sensory experience you have with art, or do you respond more to the “conceptual implications”?
  4. When you make work, do you anticipate how people will interpret the work? How do you feel about opening the work to interpretation when putting it in front of an audience?
  5. How do you think the sensory experience of viewing a computer screen differs from that of a painting? Is the sensory experience more or less important when looking at new media?

Please feel free to include additional thoughts. These questions are only intended as thought provoking guidelines.

BFA Seminar Spring 2010 – Week 7 Response Questions

Read the following essay by Mark Tribe:

“Art in the Age of Digital Distribution”

*You can access pdf versions under the reading list post.

Consider the above information and respond to the following questions:

  • Where do you think Design overlaps with new media art?
  • Does your own activity fall somewhere in between? If so, why?
  • What do you think of appropriation as an approach to art making?
  • How do you think new media art changes the value of the art object?

Please feel free to include additional thoughts. These questions are only intended as thought provoking guidelines.

Digital Design and Fabrication Spring 2010 – Shooping List for Basic Sewing

February 16th, 2010 by admin

In order to begin fabricating your projects using a sewing machine or by hand, you may want to have the following materials on hand:

(These items can be purchased at your local fabric store)

  • sharp scissors (fiskars is a good brand)
  • thread (This can complement or contrast with your fabric. It can become an aesthetic element of your piece.)
  • box of pins ( I like the kind with the colored balls on the end, because you are less likely to step on them. They are also handy if you have animals at home.)
  • bobbins (if you are using a machine)
  • seam ripper
  • invisible ink marker
  • an assortment pack of needles for a Kenmore machine, or whichever machine you will be using.
  • some inexpensive fabric for experimenting on (muslin is one of the cheapest fabrics you can buy)
